The story follows Brian, a military combat veteran, artist, loner, and experienced wilderness survivalist living among the remote forests of the American Northwest. Comfortable in the wilderness and accustomed to relying on his own knowledge and instincts, Brian shares his isolated world with the animals around him—including three deer companions named Rose Nose, Zippity, and Doo Dah.
Then, one winter morning, everything changes.
A mysterious flash of light leads to Brian and the three deer being taken from Earth aboard an alien spacecraft. When Brian awakens, he finds himself farther from home than he could have imagined—stranded beneath two suns on an enormous alien world filled with unfamiliar landscapes, strange creatures, and animals gathered from across the stars.
With no civilization to rely upon and no clear way home, Brian falls back on the skills that have always kept him alive.
